A Duo of Hole-in-One’s by Members on the Same Day!

On June 2, Steve Roy made an ace on #8. He was playing with Scott Henderson, Mark Allen Treadwell, Charlie Nowlin, and John Nathan.

On the same day, Myra Bryson made her ace on #11! Myra was playing with Betty Zettler, Rhonda Hodgson, and Stephanie Craft.

Congratulations to both and a high five to Myra for joining the Hole–in–One Club!

Southern Junior

The much anticipated Southern Junior was a smashing success! The event was held June 12-15.

A total of 21 states and seven different countries were represented by junior golfers (14-18 years old). The field consisted of 168 players with a 3.5 USGA Handicap Index or better. This was the first time since 1992 that this event was held in our state.

Players and parents began arriving on Sunday evening, and all played a practice round on Monday. Most of the participants had never been here or even heard of the slice of heaven we are fortunate to call home!

The field was cut by more than half to 66 players following the completion of 36 holes. All players at +4 or better made the cut and played the final round.

This event featured some 40+ players that had already committed to play golf at the collegiate level, and the majority of the others were hoping to lock up verbal commitments sometime this summer. There were a plethora of Division 1 coaches on property throughout the week from institutions including:

  • Auburn University
  • The University of Alabama
  • Troy University
  • Samford University
  • Louisiana State University
  • The University of Arkansas
  • The University of Tennessee
  • The University of Mississippi
  • Wofford
  • Sewanee–The University of the South
  • Mississippi State University
  • The University of South Alabama
  • The University of Alabama-Birmingham
  • Army West Point

Parents, coaches, officials, and players were in awe of our facility and thankful that our membership was willing to host this event!

We had numerous highlights throughout the week! Johnny Bai of China made an ace on #5! That’s right, the first ace on a Par 4 at Willow Point. The hole played 280 yards in the final round and yielded tons of birdies, and some big numbers too!

Beck Burnette of Georgia made and ace on #13 in the second round to secure his place on Thursday. There were some great scores posted with the lowest being 66.

A big shout out to Willow Point members Luke Dasher and Wilson Andress for making the cut as well as our friend, Ford Clegg from Birmingham.

The championship turned out to be quite the battle! With two holes remaining, first round leader, Ethan Hagood of Birmingham trailed Texas’ Kyle Cox by two. Hagood birdied #17 and #18 to force a playoff. The multi-hole aggregate playoff was played on #10, #11 and #18. Hagood continued his birdie streak on #10, #11, and… #18! Ethan Hagood birdied his last five holes to take home the title!

The ladies were unable to play golf on the June 15 due to Willow Point hosting the Southern Golf Association Junior Amateur. Quite a few women volunteered to help with scoring during the three days of play and were treated to some great golf!

Tropical Storm Cindy was an uninvited guest for our play day on Thursday, June 22. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate for June 29. Look for results in our next Willow Leaf.

Myra Bryson and Alyce Carlisle traveled to Indian Hills Country Club in Tuscaloosa with the Alabama Seniors June 18 through June 21. They were on the team which finished fourth in Tuesday competition.

Don't forget that Matt and our president, Ann Harrison, have planned an overnight trip to Huntsville July 18 & 19. Plans are to play The Ledges golf course. We'll play nine holes on Tuesday and eighteen on Wednesday. Please contact Matt by July 8 if you'd like to go!

Hope everyone has a happy and safe 4th!

The last few weeks have been busy at the golf course. We hosted the Southern Golf Association Junior Amateur July 12-15, followed by the popular Member-Guest the next week.

It looked like it would rain every day the week of the Southern Junior. Thankfully, it would either dissipate or go around the course. The week of the Member-Guest it DID rain every day. While the conditions were less than ideal, and the course was not what we were working for, everyone had a good time. With the Fourth of July approaching, we are busy cleaning and cutting the course. We're hoping for better weather for all to enjoy during this time.

We are loosely back on our verticutting schedule. With the holiday, we will be verticutting on July 5. This will put us in play, so be watching for our guys as we work to make the greens better. On July 24 we will aerify our greens. If the weather cooperates, this will only take one long day. The next few days after that will be spent verticutting, topdressing, rolling and making sure they will play as good as they can when we reopen on that Friday.

We will prepare for the Willow Am and Labor Day after the greens have started to heal. We will spray our fungicides for spring dead spot in mid-September. Spring dead spot consists of two different applications a month apart and later in the fall.

The course has endured the rain, and it's now dried out and back to our usual playing condition. Hopefully, we won’t have that much rain again this summer, and you can enjoy the course in a dry state. We hope to see you soon at the Point!
