Ferguson and Pounds clinch the title in the Member-Member

As always, the Member-Member Tournament provided a great weekend for all who participated. The weather was perfect. The format was match play with teams playing 5-nine hole matches, and there was a lot of excitement all the way to the last match. After the completion of play, the top teams participated in a Shoot-Out to determine the champions.

The Shoot-Out took place entirely on #18 and provided great drama for all those who hung around to watch! Gil Ferguson’s long drive set his partner, Hamilton Pounds, up for success with only 190 yards to the green. Hamilton striped a 5-iron on the green, and they breezed through the first round of the Shoot-Out. Johnny Dark and Randy Adair met Ferguson and Pounds in the final chip-off with the Ferguson/Pounds team taking the title by a mere 2 feet!

Willow Point takes home the Pro-Lady Title

On May 10th, over 120 lady golfers from all over the state brought their home club professionals to Willow Point for our annual Pro-Lady Tournament. Willow Point fielded three teams, and they all played well!

The team of Rhonda Hodgson, Chris Stephens, Stephanie Craft, and Matt Sheppard won the Gross Division with a score of 140 in a two best ball format. The team of Betty Zettler, Myra Bryson, and Prudy Skoog finished strong in 3rd Place in the gross division! All of our ladies played great, and we look forward to keeping the title next year!

Great Playing in the Month of May

As the golf season has cranked up, so have some great rounds, and I wanted to highlight a couple.

On May 12, Myra Bryson shot a career-best 75! She had three birdies!!! Also on May 12, Betty Zettler shot an 85! I think there may be something in the water! Great playing ladies!

One of our Interns, Jacob Morgan, recently participated in the National Junior College Championship. Jacob played well and finished t-49th with rounds of 78-73-73-73. Look for him next time you are here at the Club!

Golf Staff Update

With the summer upon us, I wanted to highlight our staff so you'll be more familiar with them when you next visit The Point!

Clay Brown - Assistant Professional
Clay is a PGA Apprentice, who played his collegiate golf at Cape Fear in Wilmington, North Carolina. He spent a couple of years working in North Carolina at River Oaks before he landed a seasonal setup. Last summer, he was on the professional staff at Mountain Air Country Club near Linville, North Carolina. Clay has also been working at Shoal Creek since last September. We are extremely excited to have Clay. Look for him this Memorial Day Weekend!

Kenyon Twing - PGA PGM Intern
Kenyon will be a junior in the fall at Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Kenyon joins us for a 3-month internship, and he will be spending time learning the ins-and-outs of golf operation. With his last internship devoted to junior golf, Kenyon brings exciting, new ideas to the program.

Jacob Morgan - Golf Intern
Jacob, entering his sophomore year at Central Alabama this fall, is a member of the CACC Golf team. Jacob is a hard-working young man that is going to be with us all summer. He, like Kenyon, will be learning all aspects of golf operation and help us raise the bar when you arrive!

Golf season is in full swing for the ladies with many recent events taking place on our home course. Willow Point hosted the Alabama Seniors April 24-27 with several of our members representing us well.

Chris Stephens' team won in the two low ball competition on Monday; Chris won individual points for the first flight Tuesday with Myra Bryson placing second. Alyce Carlisle won the third flight, and Mary Ann Burns was awarded a dozen golf balls for closest to the pin.

The weather has been exceptional for Thursday play days. On April 28, "circle nine" was played with Mary Ann Burns finishing first, Elan Abrams second, and Myra Bryson third.

The following Thursday was a special day as we celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a sombrero scramble. It was a fun and exciting challenge to wear a sombrero while hitting every shot with a stiff wind!

Two teams tied for first place: Rhonda Hodgson, Alyce Carlisle, Betty Zettler, and Mel Albright as well as Ann Harrison, Beth Adams, Molly Currie, and Cindy Holliday.

It was Cindy's first time to play with the ladies, and we all hope she will join us again! After play, we went to Liz Gauntt's home for margaritas and a delicious Mexican lunch. Also, Beth Adams was the winner of Nautical Golf by hitting the 93 yard floating green three out of five times. It was a Thursday to remember!

On May 12, we played "blind partner draw" with the following winners: first - Betty Zettler and Liz Gauntt; second, Myra Bryson and Sandra Spraggins; and third, Charlotte Knight and Mary Ann Burns. Myra and Betty both had great days as Myra fired a 75, and Betty an 85!

On May 19, we played "Criss-cross" with Prudy Skoog winning first place. Betty Zettler and Rhonda Hodgson tied for second; Myra Bryson and Sandra Spraggins in third. Three golfers had chip-ins: Elan Abrams, Betty, and Rhonda.

Ann Harrison and her assistant, Beth Adams, are expecting a big turnout for our invitational June 2. Hopefully, I'll have several Willow Point winners to report for the next Willow Leaf!

Summer is finally here! I know everyone is ready to be at the lake and relax for a while.

In the past couple of months, we have been busy finishing a few projects to make The Point even better! For those who would like or need a little shorter course, the forward tees are now ready. The markers on these eight holes will be green.

We also resodded the 6th back tee with Zoysia grass due to shade issues. It will be another couple of weeks before this tee is ready for play.

Due to our steep bunker faces, heavy rains washing sand off those faces, and softness, allowing plugged lies, we are now using the Aussie method for raking bunkers. By not raking the faces, it allows them to form a light crust helping to keep the balls from plugging. They also don’t wash as bad. This allows most of the balls to collect in flatter parts of the bunkers and not on the slopes, making them easier for you to smooth out after you hit your shots and where you entered the bunker.

We are looking forward to a great summer. The golf course is in good condition and will keep getting better with the warm nights. This also means that the rough will continue to grow, and we will have better definition on the course. With the perfect weather, a beautiful lake, and a great golf course, we hope to see you soon at The Point.
