Great Golf in the Last Two Months!

We've had some great golf being played on the course during this beautiful weather. Highlighting some of the outstanding play were a couple of deuces and three aces!

Charlie Williamson made a deuce on #10 on Thursday, June 16, and the very next day, Steve Roy also had one! That’s pretty unique, especially due to the flag being tucked on the ridge right behind the bunker!

Dwayne Dark's hole in one on #11

Pat Molony's son-in-law had an ace on #8

On Friday, June 10, Dwayne Dark made an ace on number 11 during an Interclub Match vs. Wynlakes.

Karen Stewart of Columbus made an ace on #11 during her practice round for the Ladies’ Invitational.

Pat Molony’s son-in-law made an ace on #8 on Sunday, May 29.

Congrats to everyone on all these stellar feats. It has been a while since we have had this many hole outs. They must come in bunches!

4th of July Weekend Play

Well, it is hard to believe that the mid-way point of the season is here, but, it is! As you all know, the 4th weekend is always one of the busiest ones of the year. As a reminder, here's important guidelines for golfing during the holiday weekend.

  • Recommended pace of play is 4 hours. So, please try to adhere to the recommendation. Remember, you can welcome faster players to play through.
  • If you are arriving by boat, please call the golf shop at 256-212-1409 for pick-up by golf cart.
  • The afternoon on the holiday weekends is slower, so remember the course is always accessible.
  • LOCAL GUESTS are described as anyone who owns, rents, or leases property in Elmore, Coosa, or Tallapoosa counties. Local guests are NOT allowed to play golf during the holiday week June 28 through July 4. Please abide by this rule as it is in place to add value to your membership.
  • SOCIAL MEMBERS are not allowed to play golf at any time, including holiday weekends.

Congratulations to our Invitational chairman, Ann Harrison, and her assistant, Beth Adams for all their hard work with this event. Also, thanks to all our volunteers who made this event happen!

Susan West was crowned the 2016 Willow Point Champion. Our own Nell Moeling finished second low net in the championship flight, and two other Willow Point ladies did well: Prudy Skoog won first gross in the sixth flight; Molly Currie was awarded second net for the eighth flight.

Our annual Ladies Choice tournament was held June 16, and it was well attended, too. Fifteen teams participated with Jamelle and Steve Shaw firing a 71 for the lowest score. Three teams shot 73.

After matching cards, Chris Stephens and partner, Tommy Spraggins, finished second low gross. Winning low net were Ann Harrison and her partner, Randy Adair. Myra and Dan Bryson were awarded second low net. Tommy Spraggins and Gail Zeanah were closest to the pin winners. Chris Stephens once again was a great special events chairman!

Even though the weather has cooperated on Thursdays, it has been HOT! On May 26, our weekly play chairman, Mary Ann Burns, chose the game "First Out; First In; First 18" with the following winners: Chris Stephens and Rhonda Hodgson both shot 85 to win low gross. Alyce Carlisle had a low net score of 71. Winning first out was Prudy Skoog with a net 31, and Sandra Spraggins was the First In winner with a net 36. Chris also had a chip-in.

June 9 was "beat the pro (Clay) day". Seven ladies managed to do that, and were awarded an additional 10% off in the pro shop. Chris Stephens had an outstanding performance, beating Clay by shooting -10; Mary Ann Burns and Molly Currie tied for second place at -4: Liz Gauntt was third at -2.

The ladies played "points" on June 23. Prudy Skoog won first place finishing +13. Sandra Spraggins was a close second at +12.

Several Willow Point ladies came home victorious from the Alabama Seniors' trip to Biloxi. On Monday, June 20, Prudy Skoog was on the first place team; Stephanie Craft helped her team finish second; and Myra Bryson was captain of the third place team. Alyce Carlisle won closest to the pin. The next day, golfers played individual points. Prudy Skoog earned second in the second flight.

We would also like to welcome Stephanie Gates, the newest member of our golf group. We will look forward to seeing her on the tee soon!

In the last month, we have gone from a nice cool, low humidity spring to the middle of summer.

While the quick change may have caught us a little by surprise, the bermudagrass has certainly responded well. This shift in temperature has allowed us to step up our verticutting of the greens. We are now a little deeper and are going over them twice a week to minimize the effect of “grain” that will always be present in a bermudagrass green.

We always follow the verticutting with a topdressing of sand to help smooth the surfaces and dilute the organic matter that is present in the soil profile. In the past two weeks, this has been very effective in producing smooth quick surfaces for play.

We will continue this until the grass begins to show a slower growth rate in the fall. Then we will adjust accordingly. We have also split our fertilize and growth regulator applications to provide a more even response by the plant resulting in more consistent green speeds and growth.

During this stretch of hot weather you may have noticed some browning in the fairways and roughs. This is due to the plants transpiring more water than we can apply during the night without creating wet soil conditions. Also, the amount of wind we have had has disrupted our sprinkler patterns.

We hope everyone is enjoying the golf course, and look forward to seeing all of you soon at The Point.
